Someone's got Linux running on the newer WRT54Gs (the ones that ship with VxWorks and have less memory).
I'm not entirely convinced about "Brainslayer has once again gone and done the unthinkable", though, since it's been on my possible-ideas list for a while. ;)
What I was more curious about was whether it'd be more sensible to port a uCLinux kernel to the hardware, since you probably don't need most of the fancy memory-management stuff on a machine that small.
That'd give you more room for interesting userspace too -- not that a router really needs that much anyway (bridging, iptables, some configuration interface).
