I remember using this trick back when I built my Z80-based computers -- I'm amazed it still works with surface-mount chips!
I still find it pretty impressive that people are modifying firmware for DVD drives these days -- I wonder what other cool stuff you could make a CD/DVD drive do...
Perhaps you could make the pitch of the drive motor controllable by MIDI, or something.
