By default, the file dialog doesn't show hidden files.
If you enter the name of one by hand, though, suddenly it does.
There's no obvious checkbox or anything to turn this on or off, and I had to resort to Google to find out how to do it.
The secret: you have to right-click on the list of filenames, then you get a context menu with a checkbox in!
This is an appallingly bad piece of interface design.
