"The real targets of terrorism are the rest of us: the billions of us who are not killed but are terrorized because of the killing. The real point of terrorism is not the act itself, but our reaction to the act."
"And we're doing exactly what the terrorists want."
David:
I've been saying that for months
... as has pretty much everyone I consider a friend
ats:
Yeah -- Bruce puts it especially well, though.
The article "Details on the British Terrorist Arrest" in that issue is also worth reading.
David: You're right, it is well put.
David: As I post this, I wonder if its cruel to JVC to let Adam loose on their new audio thingy
ats:
It's actually a sensible idea -- and not a new one at all.
I don't think there's a standard name for the technique, but searching the web for "spherical loudspeaker" or "point source loudspeaker" will find plenty of examples.
David: You disapoint me. I like it when you savage audiopiles. And "ideal audio source" is a phrase begging for a savaging!
ats:
Yeah, but it's a technical phrase -- the idea is that you want a speaker to behave as if it had zero size, so having a spherical set of drivers is indeed an approximation to an ideal speaker.
Plus it's actually quite cute. ;)
And it's JVC, so it's consumer-market rather than audiophile.
David:
Drat. The Faction novels was some of the most engaging sci-fi I've read of late
Certainly a lot better then most of what RTD produces
ats: "The Iraqi government plans to seal off Baghdad next month by ringing it with a series of trenches and setting up dozens of traffic checkpoints to control movement in and out of the city of seven million people, an Interior Ministry spokesman said today."
Yes, because the Berlin Wall was such a shining example of democracy in action.
