This reminded me of one of my old Amiga projects...
... although my hardware was a bit simpler:
The software was probably a bit simpler too (the file's dated September 15th 1996, which is probably accurate).
The trick to the hardware was that the joystick/mouse button pins on the Amiga were actually GPIOs, and could be reprogrammed as outputs. Since the Amiga supported a three-button mouse (and I used to use one), you could quite easily do an RGB version -- but RGB LEDs weren't (easily) available in 1996!
Having an LED that flashed to indicate the system load was quite handy, anyway.
