"The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009."
(Before you ask, this appears not to be an April Fool's joke.)
So Sony are retroactively disabling the ability to run Linux on PS3s. This will come as something of a shock to the researchers who've spent (in some cases) hundreds of thousands of dollars on PS3 systems for scientific computation.
I guess our lab PS3s are going to need some "Do not, under any circumstances, upgrade firmware" stickers...
Also, thanks, Sony, for providing me with another case study for my "how not to do Open Source" lecture in a couple of weeks' time.
David: Sounds like time to tell the DNS server that the PSN is on localhost.
ats: I suspect that would annoy any of our students living on campus who have PS3s, though...
ats: "OpenSSL 1.0.0 is now available."
